We look at the stars that play the action movies today, perhaps without looking back at the rich history of these big-screen heroes. To do that, we'd have to go back to the earliest days of movies and remember the greats like Douglas Fairbanks. He's played Robinhood, Zorro, and countless other action characters with the high-energy star quality that has inspired the best in DC, Marvel, and others.
Fairbanks' career spans 51 feature films, many produced by his own production company. He was known for big budgets, high thrills, and artistic filming techniques.
Perhaps THE THIEF OF BAGDAD was his crowning glory! He wanted the best for the production, which shows in every frame.
Fairbanks knew how to take advantage of the silent film genre – with almost dance-like qualities of movement that seemed to react to the music being played live. Mortimer Wilson was hired to play a “classical style” score that would pay more attention to the work's musicality – presenting a kind of ballet with the actors on the screen. As hard as it is to synchronize the music to this effect, it's been a HUGE honor to bring Fairbanks' original vision of music and visuals together in perfect “harmony.”
