The GFFO continues its quest to restore and perform all nine episodes of the famed Fleischer Brothers animated SUPERMAN series with episode #5 – BULLETEERS (1942).
A band of criminals threatens to destroy the city with their unstoppable bullet rocketship. This looks like a job for SUPERMAN!
In 1942, this job was for the famous Fleischer Brothers Studios, an animation company famous for the characters BETTY BOOP, POPEYE, and many other cutting-edge early cartoons. The brothers set out to make the technicolor masterpieces after landing the most expensive contract for animated shorts up to that time. Paramount Studios awarded $5.4 million (2023 dollars) for nine 1-reel (approximately 8 minutes) cartoon episodes. There were a total of 17 episodes, but the brothers left the project after the 9th installment. What they created is heralded as some of the most innovative high-quality animation set to film. These hand-drawn marvels have been restored to their rich visuals and presented in 4K for the performance.
